Through its various sections, the Festival has offered an eclectic selection of films, which showcased several cinematographic universes from different regions of the world, reflecting the diversity and creativity of international film production. Notwithstanding its rule, the FIFM has paid a series of tributes to emblematic figures of the 7th art, namely the great director, producer, and American actor Robert Redford, the great French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier, the star of Moroccan cinema Mouna Fettou and Bollywood icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas. In addition, twelve big names of the world cinema have been in free conversation (In Conversation With) with the public of the city ocher during this edition. These include American filmmaker, actor, and producer Robert Redford, Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard, Elia Suleiman a multi-award winning Palestinian director, independent British producer Jeremy Thomas, and cult American actor Harvey Keitel. that stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Golshifteh Farahani, Hend Sabri, and Luca Guadagnino. The Festival was also marked by the organization of the 2nd edition of “Ateliers de l’Atlas”, a program dedicated to cinemas in Africa and the Middle East, which brought together 270 international professionals around a selection of 28 projects by a new generation of Moroccan, Arab and African filmmakers.

On Saturday, November 30 at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa presided over a Gala Dinner hosted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the launch of the 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival. During this event, the princess met the jury, the foreign stars as well as the foreign and national partners of the Festival. Note that this event, which brings together several major figures in world cinema such as actor Robert Redford and actress Priyanka Chopra, will pay tribute this year to Australian cinema.
Mohamed Dekkak together with hundreds of Moroccan and foreign guests, world famous or known in Morocco were placed around the tables according to a device meticulously studied by the organizers to respect the hierarchy and the notoriety.
Upon arrival, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa reviewed an Auxiliary force detachment that was honored before being greeted by the Minister of Tourism, Crafts, Air Transport and Social Economy, Ms. Nadia Fettah, and the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, government spokesman, Mr. Hassan Abyaba.
His Royal Highness was also greeted by the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, Governor of the Prefecture of Marrakech, Mr. Karim Kassi Lahlou, President of the Council of the Marrakech-Safi region, Mr. Ahmed Akhchichen, the President of the Commune of Marrakech, Mr. Mohamed Larbi Belcaid and the President of the Prefectural Council, Ms. Jamila Afif.
HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa was also greeted by the two Vice-Presidents of the Foundation of the International Film Festival of Marrakech, MM. Faïçal Laraichi and Sarim Fassi Fihri, Councilor of the Festival Foundation, Mélita Toscan Du Plantier, Artistic Director of the Festival, President’s Advisor to the Festival Foundation, Secretary General of the Festival, and the general treasurer and the general coordinator of the Festival.
Afterwards, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa went to the Salon d’Honneur where she was presented to Her Royal Highness the jury, foreign stars as well as foreign and national partners of the Festival.
The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival
In the grounds of the Congress Palace, the festivities were launched with the traditional presentation of the members of the jury. After the arrival of the jury president, Scottish actress and producer Tilda Swinton, surrounded by eight outstanding and world-renowned personalities, representing different cinematic expressions, a posthumous tribute was paid to the theater icon, from film and television in Morocco, Amina Rachid, and her husband, Abdellah Chaqroun, a leading figure in theater and literature.
The jury of the official competition of this 18th edition is composed of British director Andrea Arnold, Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, Italian-French directors Rebecca Zlotowski and Italian-French actress Chiara Mastroianni, actor Mikael Persbrandt, by Afghan director and author Atiq Rahimi, Moroccan director Ali Essafi and Australian director David Michôd.

On the occasion of this new edition, the Festival reconnects with one of its traditions, initiated in 2004: to pay homage to world cinema by putting a country and a
cinematographic expression in the spotlight.

Several of them will be screened for this 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival. Powerful and foundational films that trace nearly five decades of cinematographic creation in Australia. A journey back in time, starting in 1971 with Ted Kotcheff’s “Awakening in Terror” or Nicolas Roeg’s “The Hike”, which will allow the general public to rediscover essential classics such as George Miller’s “Mad Max” or rarities. like Peter Weir’s cult film “Picnic at Hanging Rock”.
The current Australian cinema is also present through films like “Breath” of the very popular actor Simon Baker who passes here behind the camera, “Lion” of Garth Davis, big international success which has not less than 6 Oscar nominations in 2017 or “True History of the Kelly Gang” by Justin Kurzel, which brings together an exceptional cast and is one of the most anticipated films of 2019. In all, the Festival program 25 Australian feature films showing all the diversity and singularity of this great cinematography.
For several decades, Australian cinema has produced films that are often recognized worldwide, while many of its actors and directors have acquired an international reputation over the years and headed for Hollywood. Many of them will also travel to Marrakech as part of a delegation that will have no less than 25 talents between actors, directors and producers.
Australia joins the long list of countries honored by the International Film Festival of Marrakech and covering five continents: Morocco, Spain, Italy, Egypt, United Kingdom, South Korea, France, Mexico, India, Scandinavia, Japan, Canada and Russia.
